Perhaps you are an avid recylcer and a green person. Why not combine the two and create something beautiful from something that ends up in the recycling bin: a wine bottle. Make drinking glasses. You'll smile every time you use them.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wine bottles
  • Glass cutter
  • Candle and matches
  • Cold water in a container or sink
  • Dremel tool
  • Grinding wheel
  • Dremel sanding attachment in 80, 120 and 150 grit
  • 200 grit sandpaper
  1. Step 1

Pick the wine bottles you would like to turn into drinking glasses. Flat-bottomed ones work best, but they can be any color that appeals to you. Clean them thoroughly before continuing. A cycle through the dishwasher works wonders.

  2. Step 2

Score the glass with a glass cutter. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure you use eye protection.

  3. Step 3

Light a candle and hold the bottle against the flame. Rotate the bottle so that the flame heats the bottle along the scored line you made. Do this in sections: Heat along the scored mark, dip the bottle in cool water, then continue heating along the scored line. This process will take up to 5 minutes or more.

  4. Step 4

Use a Dremel tool to grind the rough and sharp edges of the bottle. Smooth it still further with various grits of sandpaper that are part of the Dremel attachments. Work your way up from 50 to 150 grit. It is imperative that you use a dust mask and eye protection while doing this step and the next. You don't want to get glass particles in your eyes or lungs.

  5. Step 5

Hand sand the edge still further with 200 grit sandpaper. Clean the glass thoroughly before using your new drinking glasses.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Dremel tool comes with a wire wheel. You can begin the smoothing of the edge with the wire wheel first before using the sandpaper.
