There is nothing more tedious than having to listen to dripping water. Not only is this sound something that will drive you crazy over time, it is also a waste of water and money. There is no reason to have to go through this punishment another day. In a short period of time you can repair it yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plumber's pliers or wrench
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • O-ring
  1. Step 1

Turn off the main water supply.

  2. Step 2

Using your flat-head screwdriver, remove the screw cover on one of the knobs. Remove the screw holding the knob to the stem. Unscrew the bell (this is covering the stem) by twisting the bell counter-clockwise.

  3. Step 3

Use your wrench and unscrew the stem bonnet.

  4. Step 4

On the bottom of the stem, there is an o-ring that is held in by a screw. Remove the screw and the o-ring.

  5. Step 5

Put the new o-ring in and secure with the screw.

  6. Step 6

Put the stem back into opening and tighten the stem bonnet.

  7. Step 7

Put the bell back on and then the knob. Put the screw cover back on. You might as well replace both the hot water and cold water washers while the main water is turned off.

  8. Step 8

    Turn the water back on.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are special tools that can be used to remove the handle and stem. If parts are stuck or rusted in, a simple spray of Liquid Wrench works well. Bring the old o-ring and stem in with you when you are purchasing a new one.
  • Make sure you turn off the water before starting. The stem you are working on is what keeps the water in the pipes.
