The Windows XP operating system allows several users to create logon accounts. Each Windows XP user has the option of setting a password for her account. This password will keep others from logging onto her user account. Just as with an email or similar password, it's wise to change your Windows XP password from time to time to ensure the security of your user account. Changing a Windows XP logon password should only take you a few minutes to finish.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Log into your Windows XP user account.

  2. Step 2

    Click "Start" in the taskbar.

  3. Step 3

    Select "Control Panel."

  4. Step 4

Choose the "User Accounts" link to access the User Accounts window.

  5. Step 5

Click "User Accounts" underneath the "Pick a Control Panel icon" heading, and a second window will appear.

  6. Step 6

Choose the account you wish to change to access the window for the account.

  7. Step 7

Select the "Change my password" link.

  8. Step 8

Enter your current password in the first text box at the top of the window.

  9. Step 9

Type the new password in the second text box. Then, type that same password into the third text box to confirm the change of password.

  10. Step 10

Type in a password hint into the last text box. When you've finished with this, click "Change Password." Your XP logon password will then be changed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change your password roughly every two to three months if several different people log onto the computer to keep your Windows XP user account safe.
  • To keep your account secure, never tell your Windows XP password (or any other password) to anybody.
