How to Convert Alpha to Numeric

The word "alpha" refers to an alphabetical letter or phrase. And because the term "numeric" means a regular number, the basic definition of converting "alpha" to "numeric" means converting words to numbers. An example of where this is useful is in phone numbers. Many TV or printed advertisements will use letter substitutes for words, such as "1-800-nnn-GOLD" to refer to an actual number.

Things You'll Need

  • Alpha-to-numeric converter
  • Go to a website that has a quick alpha-to-numeric converter. (See Resources for the converter used for these instructions.)

  • Type the word to convert in the box marked "Alphanumeric Number Entry". You can put the entire number in here, such as "1-800-nnn-Gold."

  • Click the "Convert to Numeric" button.

  • Look at the box next to "Converted Numeric Representation" to find what the letters stand for as numbers.

  • To convert alpha to numeric without using a converter program from a website, simply look at your phone. Under or above each number on the phone are a few letters. For example, "ABC" is listed under or over the "2."

  • Convert each letter one at a time using this code on your phone. For example, "1-800-nnn-ACAR" would have the last 4 digits of "2227" because "A" and "C" are listed with "2" and "R" is with "7."
