How to Design Food Labels
Design food labels for all of your preserved and canned cuisine at home without the need for fancy equipment. Rather than just a name written with marker across the top of the jar, make your homemade food stand out from the manufactured canned goods with beautiful labels that you have designed yourself to match the theme of the food inside.
Things You'll Need
- Graphic design software
- Sheet of 4-by-2 inch printable white shipping labels

1
Open your graphic design software to a new document and set the size of the document to 4 inches wide and 2 inches high. Feel free to use whatever graphic design software you have available, such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Picture It.
-
2
Add a border to the document using either a line tool or small shapes. If the food you are labeling is jam, you might want to use a small clip art shape of apples or grapes to make up the border, or perhaps cucumbers if you have made canned pickles.
-
-
3
Type the information about the food onto the label using the text tool. Include the title of the item, the date that it was made and the ingredients in it. For example, for those canned pickles, you would type something like "Sweet Pickles - 10/03/09" on the top line and then list the ingredients in the pickles underneath the title.
-
4
Place the sheet of shipping labels into your printer as directed by the manufacturer for this paper type.
-
5
Select "File" and then "Print" from the menu options on the top of the page to open the printer box. Set your printer settings to high quality and the size to 8.5-by-11 inch paper. Then select the type of paper you are using, which in this case is 4-by-2 inch shipping labels, and click "print."
-
6
Peel the paper off of the back of the sticker and place the food label onto the jar or other food container.
