How to Detox Your Liver & Colon

If you are considering a liver and colon detox program, start with the colon. According to holistic doctor Scott Olson, a backed up colon is related to ailments such as fatigue, acne, back pain, colitis, irritability, and frequent cold and flu infections. Adding a liver cleanse after this can aid digestion and energy levels, and the two detox programs suit each other well.

Things You'll Need

  • Herbal colon cleanse pills
  • Herbal laxative pills
  • Distilled water
  • Organic unpasteurized apple juice
  • Organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit juice

Instructions

    • 1

Take the recommended amount of colon cleansers throughout the detox program, which usually lasts five days to two weeks (see Resources). Make sure to drink plenty of distilled water every day to ensure that your body is eliminating toxins.

    • 2

Begin a liver flush once the colon cleanse is finished. Drink 1 qt. of organic unpasteurized apple juice per day for three days. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, processed meats and sodas during this time. Take vitamins to be sure that your body does not become depleted of nutrients.

    • 3

Drink a mixture of 8 oz. of olive oil with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon. You can also add grapefruit or pineapple juice to make the concoction more palatable.

    • 4

Lay on your right side in fetal position for at least one half hour immediately after drinking the olive oil. You may feel an urge to spit up bile or vomit, but this will usually pass. You can eliminate gallstones through this procedure.

    • 5

Follow a liver cleansing diet for a set period of time after the liver flush. In general, avoid irritants such as alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Take vitamin supplements, but also eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed nuts and seeds. The liver also thrives on healthy doses of Omega 3 fats. Avoid foods with preservatives or with ingredient names that you cannot pronounce.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take herbal laxatives as needed to ensure at least one daily bowel movement during the colon cleanse. You may also choose to fast, and should at least avoid enriched flour, sugar, processed foods and animal proteins.

  • Do not take prescription drugs during a liver flush due to the danger that they will not be absorbed at their usual levels by your body. Consult with a medical practitioner before implementing a detox program. Only drink distilled water during the cleanse.
