Step 1
Articles of Incorporation must be applied for in your state. You will need to establish the name, vision and mission statement for your starting your non profit organization. Your name should have the abbreviation of Inc. after it. You will need at least three initial officers. The IRS requires that your Articles include a TERM AND DISSOLUTION clause and a NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION clause which states that no part of the net earnings of the corporation shall ever inure to the benefit to its members, directors, officers, or other private persons ....etc.
There a different registration fee in each state for filing your articles of incorporation. Contact your state office. -
Step 2
Apply for your Federal Tax Idenification number. You should use the same name that you used on your incorporation document. This can be filed by contacting the IRS.
-
Step 3
Establish Constitution and bylaws for your nonprofit organization.
-
Step 4
Complete the 1023 application. You can download the application from the http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1023.pdf website. The application can be overwhelming. I would recommend downloading the 38 page instructions document. This document should answer any questions you many have for completing the 501c3 non profit application.
-
Step 5
Compile all the Signed documents mentioned above and mail your completed 501c 3 non profit application with your user fee of either $300.00 or $750.00.
