Step 1
Medium to LargeSelect sweet potatoes that are not too large, aim for a medium sized potato. Rinse the skin of the potato thoroughly especially if you will be eating the skin. Wrap the potato in foil and twist the ends of the foil. The result will be a potato that looks like a football.
-
Step 2
The piercing forkPierce the potato with a fork through the foil about four or five times in different places all over the potato. This will help vent the potato. Bake in the oven at about 450 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes on a baking sheet. About half way through the cooking, using an oven proof glove, squeeze the potato. It should start to get soft. You will know when it is done when you can squeeze it.
-
Step 3
Squeeze both endsThe sweet potato can be served several ways. Using a knife cut through the potato starting from one football end to the other. Go about half way deep. Squeeze both ends of the potato slightly toward the middle and the potato will open up. The first way to style the potato is just like a regular baked potato. You can top the potato with butter or margarine, sugar, nutmeg and or cinnamon. These are the flavors that would be used if you were making sweet potatoes or yams on the stove.
-
Step 4
The perfect baked sweet potatoAnother way the baked sweet potato can be served is to take it out of the foil and cut it open as indicated above. Pour over the open potato the same ingredients that you topped the potato with in step 3. This time, however, warm the butter or margarine in a small sauce pan. Stir in sugar, nutmeg and or cinnamon, just until heated. Another idea is apple butter, warmed, as a topping for the potato.
