      Wash the potatoes and pierce the skin in several places with a fork.

      Place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for one hour. Turn the potatoes once as they bake.

      Opt for the classic: butter and brown sugar. For a variant on this traditional topping, add chopped pecans or walnuts.

      Spice up your sweet potato. Add butter and a flavorful spice such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger or curry.

      Place dollops of sour cream on the baked sweet potatoes and sprinkle with chives.

      Transform the sweet potato into a complete meal by topping it with chili. Chilis with or without meat work equally well.

      Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon on the sweet potato and top with a few miniature marshmallows. Put the sweet potato in the oven for 30 seconds to 1 minute to let the marshmallows slightly melt.
