Things You'll Need:
- cast iron pan
- mixing bowl
- oil
- butter milk
- cornmeal
- water
- oven
- non-stick spray
-
Step 1
Before you begin, make sure you have all your materials for making the cornbread. Everyone knows what a pain in the neck it is to have to borrow a cup of milk from their neighbor so be sure to prepare. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
-
Step 2
Once all your materials are ready, pour about 2 cups of cornmeal into your mixing bowl. Now add about a 1/2 cup of butter milk, and approximately 3-4 cap fulls of cooking oil.
-
Step 3
Stir until the mixture is the consistency of a very wet paste. You don't want it to be too watery, but you want to be able to pour the mixture easily. If your mixture is too dry, add water until the consistency is right.
-
Step 4
Now, spray your cast iron pan with a thick layer of non-stick cooking spray. Pour the mixture into the pan and smooth the top with your spoon.
-
Step 5
Make note that the batter will rise so leave about a fourth of an inch to the top of the pan to allow for the rise. Put the pan in the oven for about 15 to 20 mins keeping an eye on it.
-
Step 6
When the cornbread has a golden brown tint, stick a toothpick into the center to make sure its done. Take the cornbread out and let it sit for about 5 to 10 mins to cool.
-
Step 7
When the pan is cool enough to handle comfortably with a pot holder, place a plate on top of the pan. While holding the plate steady, quickly flip the pan over. The cornbread should come right out of the pan onto your plate. It should have a dark brown tint.
-
Step 8
Now cut and serve!
