Make Paper Silhouettes (Crafts)

Making silhouettes was once a popular pastime. People would cut silhouettes in all sorts of shapes, and profile outlines were especially popular.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fine cutting skills are needed to make silhouettes. Practice on scraps of paper to learn the technique before you set to work on these shapes.

  2. Step 2

The contrast between light and dark draws a person's gaze. You should either cut your silhouette from black paper and lay it on a light background, or cut it from light paper and place it on a dark background.

  3. Step 3

Try your hand at a larger silhouette, maybe a profile of yourself. Silhouettes of candles and Christmas trees are very seasonal, while pumpkin and cat cut-outs would make good Halloween party invitations.

  4. Step 4

To make a butterfly silhouette, fold a sheet of black paper in half. Draw half of a butterfly on the side of the paper that borders the fold. When you cut along the edge of your sketch, through both halves of the paper, you will have an entire butterfly. Make a card from a folded sheet of paper and glue a piece of red paper onto the cover of the card. Glue the butterfly silhouette onto the piece of red paper.

  5. Step 5

To make a Halloween card use bright yellow paper for the silhouette. Use a card made from yellow paper and glue on a black background, leaving a yellow border around the edge of the card. Fold a small piece of yellow paper in half and draw on half of the pumpkin face. Cut it out and glue it onto the black background.
