The idea behind personalizing your own basketball sneaker began in the early 1920s, when Chuck Taylor went to work for Converse as a shoe salesmen. It was then that the "Chuck Taylor All-Stars" were born. Since then, numerous basketball players have made a lot of endorsement money wearing shoes named after them, none more popular than the "Air Jordan" brand developed by Nike in the 1980s for NBA star Michael Jordan. But the good news is, you don't have to be a superstar to customize your own basketball sneaker. All you need is an idea and a connection to the Internet.

  1. Step 1

Choose a website. There are plenty of places to build basketball sneakers online, with NikeID.com and Converse.com leading the way. Both offer basic steps and detailed instructions on how to make your shoe look exactly as you wish. The process is pretty much the same with all sites.

  2. Step 2

Pick a model and size. Most shoe builders offer different shapes and sizes for men, women and kids. The first step is to click on the tab that allows you to choose these different options, then select the one that best suits your needs.

  3. Step 3

Know your colors. Each step of the sneaker-building process allows you to choose from a variety of colors. You can do this as you go, as both NikeID and Converse have a picture of the shoe on the screen as it is being built. This allows you to see exactly how the different colors will match (or clash) while building. After you're done, you can always go back and make changes. Most sites also have different multicolored patterns from which to choose.

  4. Step 4

Build away. The first option on most sneaker builders is the "base," or front tip of the shoe. Customize the colors and material of the base, repeating the process for each option, from the shoe's accent and lining to its stitching and laces.

  5. Step 5

Personalize the sneaker. Some sneaker builders, such as NikeID, allow you to personalize your shoe by placing your name and number on the back or sides. To do this, click on the tab that reads "personalize" or "ID" and type in your name, followed by a number. NikeID and a few others also allow you to pick the color of the information.

  6. Step 6

Check out. Once the shoe is designed to your liking, the final step is to add it to your shopping cart. You can either check out or build another pair, depending on how much you are willing to spend.
