How to Care for UTI Symptoms at Home

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are most common in women, most likely in the form of a bladder infection (not affecting the ureters or kidneys). It presents as painful urination due to irritation of the urethra. If left untreated, the UTI progresses into the ureters and kidneys, causing a high fever and flank pain, and antibiotic treatment becomes necessary. In the early stages of UTI, you can treat the infection by adhering to a few guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink plenty of water each day. The daily recommended amount of six to eight glasses is sufficient. This keeps fluid moving through the urinary tract to deter bacteria from building up.

    • 2

Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice raises the acidity of the urine to create a harsh environment for the bacteria.

    • 3

Take an over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate pain.

    • 4

      Take showers instead of baths.

    • 5

Do not hold your urine. Urinate frequently to deter the buildup of bacteria.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other conditions may have the same symptoms as a UTI. Therefore, you should consult with your doctor to confirm the diagnosis. Fever, flank pain and pus in the urine are signs of a more advanced infection. If these symptoms occur, consult your doctor immediately. Do not allow symptoms to remain for more than 24 hours without consulting with your doctor.
