How to Block Popups on IE

Popup ads are small windows that can appear suddenly while you are browsing the Internet. As small, single occurrences, they can be minor annoyances. However, appearing as large-boxed, multiple events, they can hinder browsing. Luckily, Internet Explorer (IE) offers control of this nuisance. Depending on which version of IE you use, the details will differ slightly from browser to browser.

      Choose the "Popup Blocker" option and then "Turn on Popup Blocker" from the IE "Tools" menu to block popup ads.

      Choose the "Popup Blocker" option and then "Popup Blocker Settings" from the "Tools" menu to adjust how popups are blocked. The "Popup Blocker Settings" dialog appears.

      Enter the site address in the "Address of Website To Allow" box and then click the "Add" button to allow popups from a specific site. The site appears in the "Allowed Sites" box.

      Click a check into the "Play a sound when a popup is blocked" checkbox to have IE alert you with a sound when it blocks a popup,

      Click a check into the "Show Information Bar When a Popup Is Blocked" checkbox for an Information Bar to appear at the top of the browser window when a popup is blocked.

      Change the "Medium"option in the "Filter Level" dropdown to control the amount of blocking: "Low" to allow popups from secure sites and "High" to block all popups.

      Click the Information Bar and choose "Temporarily Allow Popups" to temporarily allow popups from the current site.

      Choose "Always Allow Popups From This Site" instead to permanently allow popups. The current site is added to the "Allowed Sites" box of the "Popup Blocker Settings" dialog.

      Choose "Always Allow Popups From This Site" to permanently allow popups. A dialog box confirms your selection.

      Click the "OK" button and the site is added to the "Allowed Sites" box of the "Popup Blocker Settings" dialog.
