The Windows Vista operating system, similar to the Windows XP system it replaced, has an easy way to change default programs. Vista contains a program called Windows Mail, which replaced Outlook as Windows' email tool, that can be used as the default email program. With all of the email options now available to computer users, it often makes sense to change the default client to the most commonly used program.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista operating system
  • Internet connection
  • Existing email address
  1. Step 1

Click once on the Windows "Start" button and select the "Default Programs" option.

  2. Step 2

Click once on the "Set your default programs" link on the "Default Programs" pop up window. The "Set Default Programs" pop up window might take a minute or so to load.

  3. Step 3

Click once on the program that you want to use as the default email program from the "Programs" list on the "Set Default Programs" window. In this example, "Windows Mail" is used. Other email programs can still be used. The default program you choose will be used automatically when an email link is clicked on in a web page, for example.

  4. Step 4

Clcik once on the "Set this program as default" link, and then click once on the "OK" button.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 1 through 4 to change the default email client to another program.
