A plastic pool liner covers the inside of an above-ground pool so it forms a water-tight container. The edges of the liner typically drape over the pool sides and are held in place with clips. Proper installation prevents tears, rips or other damage to the pool liner.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clips (coping strip)
  1. Step 1

Lay out the pool liner in a large, sunny area for about 15 to 30 minutes. The plastic will get warm and be easier to mold inside the pool.

  2. Step 2

Spread out the liner inside the pool. The seams should sit at the base of the pool walls.

  3. Step 3

Pull the sides of the liner up and over the pool walls. Make sure at least several inches of liner overhang the edge.

  4. Step 4

Secure the edges around the pool wall using the clips provided (sometimes called coping strips). The clips typically fasten onto the top of the wall by pressing down on them.

  5. Step 5

Slowly add water to the pool. As the water covers the bottom, pull the liner tight so it sits flat against the ground and sides of the pool. If the liner is not tight, it may tear from the weight of the water or get punctured when stood upon. You may need to remove some of the clips to adjust how the liner sits against the sides and bottom.

  6. Step 6

Smooth out the wrinkles as the water gets several inches deep. Some wrinkling is OK and will not affect the performance of the liner; but make sure large areas of plastic do not overlap.

  7. Step 7

Finish filling the pool with water. Double-check that all the clips are tight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to buy the correct size pool liner for a proper fit. Check your pool's product instructions for details.
  • Do not trim the extra liner from the outside of the pool. You may need the excess to adjust the lining.
