How to Replace the Carpet on a Cat Scratching Post

Save

Your cat cannot take herself downtown for a manicure special. If she's an outdoor cat she may sharpen her nails on trees, or perhaps your sofa is she's an indoor feline. A cat scratching post can save your furniture from the damage a cat's claws can cause, but over time, it will begin to look a bit ragged. Instead of putting it out to the curb, consider re-carpeting your pal's post.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Replacement carpet
  • Staple gun
  • Heavy duty staples
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Cut away the old carpet using the utility knife. Try to remove it in one piece so that you can use it as a template to measure your new carpet piece.

  • Remove the staples from the bare post using the following steps.

    • Loosen the staple with the flat head screwdriver
    • Remove the staple by gripping it with the pliers
  • Remove any stray carpet fibers using the vacuum cleaner.

  • Lay the old carpet onto the new carpet. Cut the new piece using the old piece as a pattern.

  • Wrap the carpet around the post and secure with the staple gun. Place a staple every few inches along the seam and along the edges at the top and bottom of the post.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut an extra piece of carpet if you have a place to store it. This way you'll be ready for your next replacement project.
  • Keep knife and staple gun away from children.
