Kwikset smart key locks allow you to program your lock for a new key (referred to as re-keying) without having to remove or replace the lock or hire a locksmith. Using the special tool provided with the Kwikset smart key lock models, you can reset your lock using these simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the door with the lock you want re-keyed.

  2. Step 2

Insert your current key into the lock.

  3. Step 3

Turn the key a quarter-turn to the right. This is the "learn" position. Keep the key in the lock.

  4. Step 4

Insert the smart key (a special tool included with your Kwikset lock) into the hole right above the keyhole. Push in the smart key as far is it goes and remove it from the lock.

  5. Step 5

Remove the key from the keyhole without twisting and insert the new key into the lock.

  6. Step 6

Turn the key a quarter-turn to the left and then a quarter-turn back to the right (now in the "learn" position again).

  7. Step 7

Try to pull the key out of the keyhole. If re-keying was successful, the key should not pull out. If the key pulls out, repeat the re-keying steps.

  8. Step 8

Turn the key a quarter-turn to the left (the upright position). Remove the key. You now have a new key and lock.
