Installing air conditioners in your upstairs rooms can help keep you cool on those hot summer nights. With the right tools, room air conditioners can be installed in your upstairs rooms in less than an hour. While you may be able to install a room air conditioner by yourself, having a friend assist you can make the job go faster and decrease the likelihood of dropping the unit or straining your back.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Leveling device
  • Spare lumber
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  1. Step 1

Open the upstairs window. Clear any debris off of the windowsill and clean with all-purpose cleaner. Use a leveling device to ensure the windowsill is level.

  2. Step 2

Install the air conditioning mounting brackets onto the windowsill or surrounding dry wall. Make sure the structure you mount the brackets to is able to support the weight of an air conditioning unit. If your windowsills are cracking or crumbling, you may have to use spare lumber to rebuild the windowsill before mounting the supportive brackets.

  3. Step 3

Install any mounting rails and interior angle support devices included with your air conditioning unit. Ensure the rails are firmly mounted to the walls surrounding the window.

  4. Step 4

Insert the air conditioning unit into the mounting brackets of the window frame. If the unit is too heavy, have another person assist you. Make sure the unit does not fall out of the upstairs window.

  5. Step 5

Lower the window onto the air conditioning unit. Use leveling objects provided by the manufacturer to prevent vibration and shifting. Insert foam pieces between the air conditioning unit and the window to create a seal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. If you are living in a rented house or loft unit, be sure to check with management to see if room air conditioners are permitted. Measure your windows before purchasing an air conditioning unit.
  • Clear the area below the upstairs window before beginning installation of the air conditioning unit. Before installing room air conditioners, make sure the window frames are in solid condition.
