How to Set Up Car Stereo Speakers

Setting up car stereo speakers is fairly simple to do. Basically, you replace the speakers that were factory installed since almost all cars come with them nowadays. To do so, you will need to remove the interior panels from your car's doors. Do this with the utmost care so you can put them back together again without any problem. Be especially certain you do not break the clips that secure them.

Things You'll Need

  • Wiring harness with cable
  • Small flat head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the inside of both front door panels and locate any screws. Note that they will be fairly small, so you may have to feel for them. Look by the door handle, near the speaker grill and under any carpeting on the bottom half of the door. Also, pull off the cranks if the car has crank windows, because there will be a spring clip underneath each one that you'll have to remove.

    • 2

Place the screws and clip, if applicable, in a spot where you won't lose them. Then, put your flathead screwdriver's head in the crack between the plastic panels and the metal of the doors. Gently move the screwdriver around the perimeter of the doors, popping off the clips as you go. Then, pull the plastic panels upward and outward.

    • 3

Put the panels to the side and turn your attention to the speakers. They will be situated directly beneath the spot where the speaker grills sat. Take out the four screws that attach each speaker to its respective door. Take them off of their wiring harnesses by pulling them toward you. Leave the wiring harnesses in place, because they're connected to the stereo's head unit.

    • 4

Plug the wiring harnesses for your new speakers into the old wiring harnesses. The cables should easily connect. Then, set up these speakers by turning them so they are in the same alignment as the old speakers were. Push them back against the door frame; you will hear a click.

    • 5

Screw your new speakers tightly in place using the screws that came with them, not the old screws. Then, replace the interior door panels. Push them down and then in, making sure all of the clips catch. Replace the screws and check to see if your speakers work properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a newer car, you may be able to remove only the speaker grates instead of having to take off the entire door panel.

  • If you have speakers in your dash instead of in the door, it's basically the same steps to remove the dash panels.

  • Make sure you buy speakers that are appropriate for your car so you don't have trouble getting them to fit in your door.
