Christmas trees were first introduced as a Christmas tradition during the Victorian era, when trees were decorated with varied ornamentation. Most of the decoration was made from plant material, hand-made items or candles. First fashioned as the paper Christmas Tree Garland, they are known as paper chains today.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut strips of paper, all of the same size. The paper could be colored construction paper, newspaper, magazine pages, Christmas wrapping paper, ribbon or decorative paper.

  2. Step 2

Match one end of a paper strip to the other end, creating a loop. Use glue or tape to attach the two ends.

  3. Step 3

Pull a second paper strip through the loop of the first one. Match the ends of the second paper strip and glue together, forming a second loop--two links of a chain.

  4. Step 4

Continue with this process until the chain is long enough to wrap around the tree several times, from top to bottom.
