1
Choose wood for your sign. You can purchase new, finished wood from a lumber store, or you can go into the woods for a good piece. An unfinished, natural look will give your signs a rustic touch. Any wood will do, but harder woods like maple and oak add sturdiness and provide a good surface for your design.

With a carving knife or power saw, shape the piece of wood before you begin adding your design. If your wood has tree bark on it, considering including it as part of the overall design. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and surface to your liking.

Find a stable workplace and begin working on your sign. Use a chisel to etch designs into the surface of your wood. A woodburning pen will burn letters or designs into the sign and give it an artistic, warm appearance.

Finish your sign with a coat of clear varnish and let it dry. Consider using acrylic paints to enhance your designs, remembering to let the natural look of the wood come through.
