How to Test ADSL

ADSL, also known as asymmetric digital subscriber line, is one of the two types of DSL lines that give residential users high-speed Internet access. Many phone companies such as AT&T offer ADSL, but sometimes your speed can be affected by a number of factors regardless of the company you choose. The distance from the phone provider and the quality of the network lines are two such factors. However, you can test your ADSL speed to determine how fast your connection really is in your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the CNET Bandwidth Meter Online Meter website (see Resources). This meter will test your ADSL speed against your own broadband service provider.

    • 2

Enter your area code in the first field. This will set the general location for the bandwidth test.

    • 3

Select the DSL option under the connection type section, located on the second field. While there are several other categories to choose from, the DSL option is best suited for ADSL testing.

    • 4

Select your ISP to test with on the third field. This section is optional, but will provide an accurate reading of your ADSL speed should you decide to list your ISP. You can also input your ISP on the word box below the drop-down menu if your ISP is not listed.

    • 5

Click the "Go" button to begin the test. A message will prompt you to wait a few moments while the testing begins. When you see a bar graph and what your broadband speed is, you have successfully tested your ADSL.
