How to Remove Rust Stains from Your Duds

When you find a rust stain on your clothing, the first step is to wash it in a heavy-duty detergent. Sometimes the stain will be removed and no further action is required. However, if the stain remains after going through the washer, do not dry the article of clothing. The heat will set the stain. Several methods can help you remove rust stains from fabric.

Things You'll Need

• Use one or more of the following:
• Salt
• Water
• Lemon
• Vinegar
• Sunshine
• Over-the-counter rust remover
• Naval Jelly
• Rhubarb
• Cream of Tartar
• Pumice Stone
• Hydrogen Peroxide

Instructions

1. Squeeze lemon juice directly on the stain, as long is it is on light colored fabric. Sprinkle salt on the lemon juice. After the clothing is fully saturated, place it in the sun to dry, then wash normally.

2. Try to remove the stain with an over-the-counter rust remover that contains oxalic acid or hydrofluoric acid. Follow the instructions for using on fabric, which should be on the package label, then wash in the washing machine.

3. Mix 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar in 2 cups of boiling water and apply to the stain. Soak until the stain is gone. Launder garment.

Tips & Warnings

• Never use lemon on dark clothing. It should only be used on light colored clothing. Lemon may bleach dark fabric.

• Do not put the stained clothing in the dryer. It will make it worse.
