Teach Your Kid To Tie A Neck Tie

Teach yourself or your child how to tie a neck tie

Two ways,
A simple knot, 6 steps
A Windsor knot, 9 steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Neck Tie
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

    Simple Knot
Place the tie around your neck, thin end about 1/3 way down you chest
Cross the tie, long end over short. This will form a loop around your neck.

  2. Step 2

Hold the tie where the two ends cross over each other with your left hand.

  3. Step 3

Using your right hand, swing the tie over the top of your left hand.
    To create a loop.
    Do this twice.
    This forms the actual knot.

  4. Step 4

Take the tie, bring it up through the loop around your neck and push it through the outer loop you just created.
The outer portion of the tie that everyone sees should be laying on top of your left hand.

  5. Step 5

Take outer portion of the tie, and push it through the outer loop, pull it down.

  6. Step 6

Cinch the knot up to your neck.
    Congratulations, you've tied a neck tie :)

  7. Step 7

A Windsor knot. (a much more elegant looking knot.)
    Do step 1, again.

  8. Step 8

Hold the tie where the two ends cross with your right hand,

  9. Step 9

Push the long end underneath and around the left side of the loop you made around your neck. It should form the left side of the knot.

  10. Step 10

Take the fat end of the tie, and put it under 1/2 of the knot you just created.

  11. Step 11

Now do the same thing you did in Step 9, but now do it on the right side.
Take the tie from underneath, and loop it around and down on the right side. If you did the correctly, you just formed the other half of the knot.

  12. Step 12

Bring the long end, around from the back, over the front of the knot from the right side, around the two halves of the knot you just created.

  13. Step 13

Now bring the tie around through the back, underneath the left side of the loop and out the front. The tie should be laying on top of the knot's outer loop.

  14. Step 14

Pull the tie down through the loop.

  15. Step 15

Now cinch the tie up your collar, and you are finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • If it doesn't work the first time, try giving the smaller end more length to start with, when you make the initial cross.
  • The narrower the tie the easier it will be to tie.
  • The tighter the loops you make, the nicer the knot will look.
  • It will take some practice before you get this right.
  • Be patient.
