Things You'll Need:
- kite
- wind
-
Step 1
The first step in flying a kite is deciding where to fly it. Open large fields are the best place. Also, a beach is a great place to fly a kite because of the breeze. Avoid any big crowds, large buildings, or above ground wires.
-
Step 2
The wind factor is important. When flying a kite, you want just enough wind to get the kite off the ground and flying. Too much wind and your kite can get destroyed. Heavier kites can handle more wind than lighter kites. Light kites fly better with mild wind.
-
Step 3
To get your kite off the ground, stand with the wind to your back. In your arms, hold the kite. As a gust of wind comes, throw the kite into the air. Only release enough string to keep the kite tight and in the air.
-
Step 4
As the kite climbs higher in the air, release more string. If the kite begins to fall, stand back a bit to make sure the kite string is tight. If needed, reel some string back in.
-
Step 5
You can increase the altitude of the kite by running. Keep the kite string tight but allow a bit of slack on occasion to let the kite fly freely. If your kite has reached an altitude where it doesn’t seem to go higher, pull down the string a little and release it. The kite might have reached an area where the wind is calm. By pulling down and releasing the string a little, the kite is likely to climb out of the calm wind area.
-
Step 6
When you want to bring the kite down, slowly reel in the string. Try to keep the kite from crashing into the ground because this could destroy the kite. Keep the kite string tight especially as it gets near the ground. Store the kite in safe place when you are done.

on 8/22/2009 I'll have to try this. I've never had a bit of luck with kites! 5*
