Step 1
Wrestle. Wrestling is a foundational skill for MMA that gives a fighter good body control, balance, takedowns and takedown defense. A huge number of successful UFC fighters were former high school or collegiate wrestlers. Starting wrestling at a younger age can help develop tendon and muscle strength as well as grappling experience.

Step 2
Train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ is a foundational skill for success in the UFC which allows fighters to employ and defend against chokes and joint locks, as well as gain better body position. A common knock against pure BJJ fighters is that they tend to lack takedown ability, which makes it harder for them to take the fight to the ground to use their grabbling. By having both wrestling and BJJ skills, a fighter is able to play to his strengths.

Step 3
Learn a striking disciple, such as Muay Thai or boxing. Striking has become an increasingly important part of being a balanced fighter in the UFC, as more and more fighters have improved their grappling and takedown defense. Between two fighters with stellar takedown defense, it is common for whole fights to take place on the feet. Being well versed in punching, kicking, knees, elbows and clinching is a must.

on 8/22/2009 Interesting article. I'm too old to even attempt any of this anymore but I do find the sport facinating. The training is certainly challenging even to the most fit and athletic. Really interesting. It's a *5*!
