Share a Computer Screen With Skype

Skype is a great way to connect with your friends and coworkers. You can use text chat, voice and even video chat all for free. You can also call land lines for small fees that blow your long distance company away. Now Skype can also help you share your computer screen with anyone on Skype and see what the other person is doing. This is very useful for helping relatives and friends with computer problems-without ever having to leave your desk. Here is how to do it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. How to Install Skype

    • 1

Download and install Skype by clicking on the "Download" button on the top menu of the website (see link in Resources below).

    • 2

      Launch Skype.

    • 3

Click on "Don't have a Skype Name?" in the login window that appears when Skype first starts up.

    • 4

Type in your preferred Skype name. This can be a nickname or your full name, but must contain at least 6 characters and no more than 32 characters.

    • 5

Enter in your password. Please use a secure password--make sure you have a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters as well as numbers; try not to make it too easy and keep your password somewhere safe.

    • 6

Type in your primary email address. Make sure it's correct, because if you lose your password, this is the only way to retrieve it.

    • 7

Click the check box to agree to the Skype End User License Agreement. You can read the agreement by clicking on the different-colored text.

    • 8

Click the check box next to "Remember my name and password on this computer." If you're sharing this computer or you want to make sure your Skype account is secure, do not click this checkbox.

    • 9

Click the check box next to "Launch Skype when I log in..." to automatically launch Skype when you start up and log in to your computer.

    • 10

To receive messages from Skype, click the check box next to "Please contact me...."

    • 11

Click on the "Create" button to create your account.

    How to Share Your Screen

    • 12

Add friends by clicking the "+" plus sign at the bottom left of the Skype window.

    • 13

Type in a name to search friends using Skype. You can only share screens with someone else who is logged in on Skype. When you find a friend, click on their name in the search results to add.

    • 14

Click on your friend's name to highilght.

    • 15

Click on "Call" from the top menu.

    • 16

Select "Share Screen." You can opt to share a portion of your screen or the full screen.

    • 17

Once you're connected, your friend should be able to see your computer screen.

Please note you appear to have to have Video enabled in order to use the share screen option. This does not appear to be noted anywhere but seems to be true from what I had to do today to get the screen sharing to work.
