A heart-healthy bowl of oatmeal is a good way to start a day. Oatmeal is low in fat and contains 100 percent whole grains, but it's also pretty boring. Some extra ingredients that won't add too much fat or calories can make oatmeal a little more interesting. Get creative and try various toppings.   • Old Fashion Oatmeal, preferable Quaker Oats.
  • Various ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen, as per your choice, such as pecans, walnuts, bananas, cinnamon, applesauce, dark chocolate, skim milk, fat free cream, Smuckers Apricot Sim

      Use old-fashioned oats instead of instant oatmeal. Prepare a serving according to the package directions.

      Split the finished oatmeal into two portions, and apply a different garnish or two to each one.

      Some of the options include 1 tbsp.fruit jelly, shaved dark chocolate, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tbsp.honey, a handful of pecan or walnuts, 1/4 cup applesauce, 1/4 tsp. vanilla flavor, and berries, raisins, and any kind of fruit.

      Blend fat free skim milk to the oatmeal. Stir and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try several flavors of Smuckers Simply Fruit. Strawberry is especially good. Also you can use canned fruit packed in light syrup, such as peaches and oranges. Bananas makes a great topping; for a special treat, saute bananas in 1 teaspoon of light margarine on top of stove in skillet and pour on top of oatmeal.

  • Get creative and try various toppings, just be sure to use healthy ingredients.
