Picking the great desktop computer is tough because of all the confusing options. For someone who isn't a technology whiz, there are just a few things to look out for, as well as knowing what you will use the computer for. Apple desktops are more user friendly and they only come in the iMac, but you pay for it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of what you will be using the computer for and what your needs are. If you are just an internet/ email/ word processing user, than you really can't go wrong with a modern computer. If you will be using photoshop and more memory intensive programs, than you will need to worry about RAM more.

  2. Step 2

If you have the means, visit the Apple store and check out the iMacs. You don't need any antivirus software, because there aren't many viruses for the Mac. They run programs very efficiently, so 2 gigs of RAM is plenty to run video editing software, and any consumer oriented software.

  3. Step 3

Hard drive size on modern computers isn't a worry because your average consumer doesn't use it up. Find a computer with at least 100 gigs of space, and you can expand or get an external later.

  4. Step 4

Everyone wants a fast computer so there are two things to look for when picking a desktop computer. The processor speed and the amount of RAM. You want a processor clock speed of at least 2.0 gigahertz or better. For RAM, on a PC, you want 3 to 4 gigs. Apple computers run fine on 2 gigs of RAM.
