Learn how to type without looking at the keyboard. When I first started typing I couldn't help but look at the keys and was incredibly slow. Now I type over 100 words per minute and have near perfect accuracy. Becoming a fast typer takes time but the first step towards increasing your speed starts with not looking at the keyboard.

      Place your right hand on the keyboard, your thumbs should be resting gently against the space bar and your other four fingers should be on the starting keys. This means that your left hand fingers are on A, S, D, F. Starting with your pinky finger on the A key. Then you place your right hand on the same row but on the J, K, L, :/; key. There should be a little raised line on the F and J keys to remind you where to keep your left and right index fingers.

      Now to stop looking at the keys you need to create cardboard blocker or purchase a keyboard visual blocking device that allows you type easily but blocks your view of the keyboard. This will be very hard at first but eventually your brain will learn where the different keys are. Practice typing messages to friends or instant message chat. You will quickly develop increased speed and accuracy and after the first week of training you will likely double your current typing speed.

      Each keyboard is different so you will need to learn which fingers reach keys the easiest. You will find that your index and pinky fingers will be forced to stretch or even at time you'll have to pick up your arm to reach a particular key. We all have different finger lengths so you will have to test your ability to reach certain keys. Still to this day I don't type exactly by the book but it works for me. If this doesn't work take a keyboarding or typing course at a nearby community college or educational institution. Practice online by finding free timed typing test and challenge yourself to get faster and more accurate. Once you lean how to type without looking at the keyboard you'll be glad you did.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use the caps lock to write capitalized letters. Learn how to use the Shift key by hitting it with your pinky finger and then hitting the letter you want to capitalize.
