Step 1
Call agencies in your area and ask specifically if they handle plus size models.Make appointments with the agencies you are interested in working for.Remember your grandmothers advice-Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
-
Step 2
Bring along a resume, and some good photos. At least one head shot and one full length. If the agency likes your look and decided to take you on, they will send you to a photographer to have some taken.
-
Step 3
Have a flexible schedule because you may need to keep your day job for a little while. In the beginning it may be a little slow because your an unknown, but things will pick up and soon you can quite that waitress job or sales clerk position and be a full time model.
-
Step 4
On the day of the interview with the agent:
Style your hair in a natural way, not too big and not too much hairspray.
Do your makeup light and fresh- they like to see how you look every day.
Wear stylish but comfortable clothes with low heels or flats. -
Step 5
Once you have been accepted by an agency, they will help you build a portfolio. This includes professional photos and a bio, similar to a resume. This is what prospective clients will look at when the agency sends you out to interviews. Of course as their model, you will have strict requirements to be on time for every appointment and photo shoot, eat a healthy diet and keep in shape. This will ensure that you have steady work.
A career as a plus size model can take you around the world to all kinds of exotic locations, so be prepared to travel on a moments notice.
Modeling agencies that also handle plus size models:
Ford 12+ Division
Wilhelmina ten20 Division
Goddess Models -
Step 6
Don't get discouraged, even top models have been turned down by agent at least once. If you're not a fit for one agency, you may be perfect for another. It may take time before you start getting steady work, so hang in there and keep in contact with your agency.

on 9/26/2009 We need more articles promoting the plus sixed ladies. I know that the modeling industry will always promote the ultra thin look. But all the Hollywood women look better to me when they gain weight. And all the great painters and sculpters never worked with thin women. I met a plus sixed lady that worked at a carnival several years ago. We went to together for two years. One day they shot her out of the cannon, and apparently her old boyfriend put way too much powder in the cannon. She went up and up, and as far as I know, she never came down. Every so often, I still look up.
