Things You'll Need:
- A Plan
- Patience
- Take Out Food
-
Step 1
Make a plan. After you are ready with your drawings, material and labor think about how you are going to live in your home while your kitchen is under construction. Will you have to move all of your appliances out? Can you work around some for awhile?
-
Step 2
Set a deadline. This is really important if you are doing the work yourself. Write down what you want to get done every day and try to stick to that goal.
-
Step 3
Plan for eating a lot of take out. You may need to add this to your remodeling budget! Even if you still have your stove connected it is miserable trying to cook when everything is covered in drywall dust and you have all your pots and pans in boxes.
-
Step 4
If you are unsure about one part of the project, enlist help before you start. You may be able to put up the cabinets and lay the flooring, but if you are unsure about the plumbing, find help before you start.
-
Step 5
If you have small children, try to get them out of the house as much as possible. It is really difficult to work when you have little ones running around. It could be a safety issue to if you have nails, exposed insulation or other hazards in their reach.
-
Step 6
Plan on possibly having to wash your pots, pans and dishes in the bathtub. Trust me it is not what will want to do, but in the end you probably will have to do it. If you have a laundry sink, use it instead.
