There are various types of meats to choose from in the grocery store. Selecting meats can be the most expensive item on your grocery list. Knowing how to select low-fat quality meats can save you money.

    In selecting a low fat meat such as beef, these are the things you need to look for when shopping. For example, is the structure of the meat mainly muscle, fat, bone or connective tissue. Is the meat your examining 100% muscle or is it a blend of muscle, connective tissue, fat or bone.

    Another variable to examine before a purchase is, what grades of meat am I going to purchase and how much am I willing to pay? The best grade of meat is USDA Prime it is the most expensive meat. This meat is very flavorful, juicy and tender. The second best grade of meat is USDA Choice is more economical and it's more comely found in grocery stores. The meat is not as tender or juicy. The third grade of meat is, USDA Select, is very inexpensive meat and it's the least flavorful meat.

    How to select low-fat meats; choosing a lean meat contains less fat. For example, eye of round, top loin, round tips and beef tenderloin are just a few excellent beef choices to choose from. Other choices are lamb loin chops, chicken breasts, turkey meat and pork tenderloin, center loin chops are also considered low-fat meats.

  • Just remember when selecting lean meats, look for visible fat on the meat, read the labels and look for key words such as Lean Choice on the package. Also keep in mind, the higher the grade of meats you choose, the more tenderize your meat will be.
