The Key to making good horse costumes for children is making the costume for two kids. One kid gets to be the front of the horse and one kid gets to be the rear of the horse.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown blanket or large piece of cloth
  • Brown Piece of rope with a frayed end.
  • Wiffle Ball
  • Chicken wire
  • Paper mache
  • Non-Toxic Paint
  • Brown yarn
  • Elmer's glue
  1. Step 1

Make the general shape of a horse's head out of the chicken wire. The head should be made so that it sits comfortably on the shoulders so that the child will be able to see out of eye holes which will be poked in the horse's neck.

  2. Step 2

Cut the wiffle ball in half, and use each half for the horse's eyes. The big, round eyes give a slightly comic look to the costume. Once you have attached the eyes, you can paper mache over the entire head (including the eyes) and wait for the paper mache to dry.

  3. Step 3

Paint the horse's head, and when the paint has dried, cut the yarn into small pieces and glue them down the back of the horse's head for the horse's mane.

  4. Step 4

Cut two eye holes and a mouth hole into the horse costume's neck; alternately, you could cut out one big hole for the child's face-- this won't look as realistic, but it could help if the child is uncomfortable having his/her head in a small space.

  5. Step 5

Affix the brown blanket to the bottom of the head so that it will cover the child wearing the head and another child behind him. Affix the frayed rope to the rear of the blanket for the horse's tail.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to poke some air holes into the blanket for the child playing the rear section of the horse.
