A memory quilt is a unique item that can be a wonderful and thoughtful keepsake to give or to keep for yourself. Creating a memory quilt allows you to put your favorite memories on a quilt with which you can warm yourself as you recall the precious memories and the loved ones with whom those memories were made.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • photographs or digital images uploaded to a computer
  • transfer paper for use with a scanner or ink jet printer
  • fabric
  • batting
  • quilting needles
  • quilting thread
  1. Step 1

Gather the photos you want to use and decide the size of your finished product. For example, if you use a twin size sheet, your finished product will be a twin size quilt.

  2. Step 2

Scan your photos to your computer, or use digital images, and then print them onto the transfer paper. (Be sure to reverse the image, using your computer's editing tools, so that when you iron it on you will get the desired view.) Once you have your photos printed on the transfer paper, decide on the layout of your quilt (ie, photos can be ironed on at 90-degree angles to one another or at random angles).

  3. Step 3

Iron your transfer paper photos onto the sheet. Once you have ironed the photos on to your sheet, you can trim them with ribbon or binding if you want them to appear to be in picture frames.

  4. Step 4

Next, you put the quilt lining (or backing)and the cotton batting together. Your quilt top is then applied. Pin the three layers together and quilt your project. You can machine quilt, or hand quilt using a quilt hoop or a quilting frame. After you have the quilt/throw completed, bind the edges.

There are many variations on this project. You can cut quilt squares and iron the pictures onto the squares, then piece the squares together.

When you have finished quilting and binding your memory quilt, you will have created a beautiful and unique heirloom.

on 11/4/2009 I remember making a memory quilt in grade school. Great concept. Memories are important especially if you can create something like a quilt out of them.
