Water conservation in the home is as easy as slightly altering your daily routine. Conserving water will not only lower your water and energy bills, but it will also reduce water demand and preserve water resources for our future. It doesn’t take much effort to conserve water, fix water leaks and use water efficient appliances and fixtures. Here’s how to conserve water at home:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
Run appliances when they are full.

Run appliances when they are full.

Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when they are full. Water conservation starts with common sense!

  2. Step 2
    Aim the water sprinkler correctly.

    Aim the water sprinkler correctly.

Aim the water sprinkler in the right place – not on the sidewalk or driveway. Also, water the lawn on days when there is no wind to blow it away.

  3. Step 3
    Avoid using the garbage disposal.

    Avoid using the garbage disposal.

Avoid using the garbage disposal. Throw away food waste instead of running gallons of water down the drain.

  4. Step 4
Avoid putting water fountains in your yard.

Avoid putting water fountains in your yard.

Avoid putting water fountains in your yard. If you have to have one, use a trickling fountain – it uses less water than ones that spray.

  5. Step 5
    Fix toilet leaks.

    Fix toilet leaks.

If the toilet runs continuously after flushing, replace the toilet flapper inside the water tank on the back of the toilet. Be sure to turn off the water supply until it’s fixed.

  6. Step 6
    Carefully review the water bill.

    Carefully review the water bill.

Carefully review the water bill each month. If it suddenly goes up, check for water leaks around the house. You can use a water leak detector to help you find the leaks.

  7. Step 7
Turn off the water when you're not using it.

Turn off the water when you're not using it.

Don’t let water run when you’re not using it (shaving, brushing teeth, washing hair). Water conservation can't get any easier than this.

  8. Step 8
    Update to air-cooled appliances.

    Update to air-cooled appliances.

Upgrade water-cooled appliances like air conditioners, ice-makers and refrigerators to air-cooled appliances.

  9. Step 9
Sweep the driveway instead of hosing it.

Sweep the driveway instead of hosing it.

Sweep the driveway and walkways instead of hosing it down with water.

  10. Step 10
    Replace fixtures.

    Replace fixtures.

Replace bathroom faucets and showerheads with water-efficient hardware.

  11. Step 11
    Take shorter showers.

    Take shorter showers.

Wash faster and get out of the shower two minutes early.

  12. Step 12
    Find toilet leaks.

    Find toilet leaks.

Put food coloring in the water tank on the back of the toilet. If the water in the bowl turns color without flushing, find the leak and fix it.

  13. Step 13
    Collect rainwater for indoor plants.

    Collect rainwater for indoor plants.

Collect rainwater outside in a bucket and use it to water indoor plants.

  14. Step 14
Don't use the toilet as a trashcan.

Don't use the toilet as a trashcan.

Don’t use the toilet as a trash can. Throw face tissues and cotton swabs in the trash to save water.

  15. Step 15
Don't thaw food under running water.

Don't thaw food under running water.

Defrost food in the microwave, not under running water in the sink.

  16. Step 16
Donate or recycle your old jeans.

Donate or recycle your old jeans.

Donate or recycle your old jeans. You may not immediately correlate jeans with water conservation, but it takes 1,800 gallons of water to grow the cotton that makes up one pair of jeans! Donate jeans to charity and let someone else wear them if you’re not going to.
