Step 1
Don't get caught running around figuring out what to do when the storm is 24 hours out. Be Prepared!
Some of the things you can do to prepare:
Build a Kit
Make a Disaster Plan
Stay Informed
Evacuate when told to -
Step 2
Put these items in your kit: a battery powered radio, extra keys, cash, credit cards, checks, phone numbers, key documents, personal hygiene items, clothing, sturdy shoes, flashlight, first aid kit, etc. If you keep important information on your computer, either use a remote backup service or backup on a portable hard drive and take it with you. Have a medical kit prepared: copies of prescriptions, supplies for items for blood sugar testing for example, names of your doctors and pharmacy, health insurance cards, and documentation on medical conditions. Take you easily transported valuables with you.
-
Step 3
If you are not evacuating, make sure you have one gallon of water per day per person. Have at least three days of non-perishable food and a manual can opener. Make sure you have appropriate supplies for your pets. If you are going to ride out the storm in your apartment or your house because you were not ordered to evacuate, take these precautions. Close and lock all windows and sliding glass doors. If you have storm shutters or window covers, put them up.
-
Step 4
Place folded towels on window and door sills to absorb leaking water. Wedge patio doors shut. Remove fragile objects from shelves. Know how to exit your apartment in the dark in case lights go out at night. Know how to get down the stairs in the dark. Close all faucets. Unplug all electrical appliances. During the height of the storm stay in a center room far from windows. Do not tape your widows but close all blinds and curtains. Clear off balconies and patios. Fill your bathtub full of water. Make sure you have a full tank of gas. Make sure your renter's insurance or home owner's insurance is up to date.

Step 5
After the hurricane, do not use tap water unless you know it is safe. Be careful of outdoor hazards like loose power lines.
