How to Succeed in a Job Interview thumbnail
Being presentable, friendly and confident are all keys to interview success.

For most people, a job interview can be a challenging scenario. Many qualified candidates, who are highly proficient in their respective fields, are unsuccessful in getting jobs because of their inability to make a lasting impression on the interviewer or because they fail to properly showcase their credentials.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the company comprehensively before the interview. Preparation will win the day and you will awe the interviewer with your understanding of his company. Studying the institution in advance will also help make you more comfortable and confident while responding to questions because you'll be able to expertly align your experiences with the company's mission and needs.

    • 2

Be as composed as you can be during the interview. If you're feeling nervous before the interview, take a few deep breaths to steady your nerves. Coming across as confident and at ease shows the interviewer that you're able to deal with stressful and tense situations with aplomb.

    • 3

Be affable during the interview. Most people appear so stiff that their actual disposition remains unapparent. Smile at the interviewer and other people you meet. Be personable, but don't be too casual -- don't tell a personal story. Keep your answers positive and don't trash old employers or coworkers.

    • 4

Keep your answers concise and to the point. Don't ramble with your answers, but don't use one word "yes" or "no" answers. Use specific examples of times you handled a situation or used a specific skill to demonstrate to the interviewer that you're experienced and the right person for the job.

    • 5

Always make eye contact because it shows that you are a confident and determined. Lack of eye contact signals to the interviewer that you are uncomfortable in your own skin.

    • 6

Greet each person you meet with a good, firm handshake. Practice this with friends and family if necessary. A weak, clammy or limp handshake will leave a bad impression. A weak handshake shows that you lack confidence.

    • 7

Follow up after the interview with a thank you letter. Send one to each person you met during the interview.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dress your best. Wearing a nicely tailored, classic suit that looks great on you can help boost your confidence and make you feel like you own the place.

  • Be thorough in your answers, and avoid simple yes or no answers. However, do not get too involved and monopolize the interview or the interviewer's time.
