The most important part of a Grateful Dead shirt is the tie-dyed decoration. There are often logos on these shirts as well; however, tie-dyeing gives clothing the look and feel of the clothing typically worn by fans of the Grateful Dead and other jam bands.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White Tshirt
  • Fabric Marker
  • Tie-Dye Kit
  • Tray or Bowl to hold water.
  • Rubber Bands
  • Plastic Bag
  1. Step 1

Create a Grateful Dead logo or graphic on your shirt, by either drawing or tracing the design onto the clothing with a fabric marker of your choice. Since you will be tie-dyeing the shirt later, I would suggest using a black marker so that the colors don't become muddied when tie-dyed.

  2. Step 2

Next, you will need to prepare your shirt to be tie-dyed. You can experiment with different methods, but one method that works well for creating a spiral is to lay the shirt flat on the table, pinch some fabric between your thumb and forefinger, and while the shirt stays on the table, twist it so that it twirls around the center. Once the shirt has been tightly twirled, wrap rubber bands around it several times so that it stays tightly twirled.

  3. Step 3

Mix the fixer from your tie dye kit with water and put it in a tray or bowl.

  4. Step 4

Soak your twirled up and t-shirt in the bowl for several minutes or until it is saturated with the solution.

  5. Step 5

Now add the dye to your shirt. The dyes usually come in squeeze bottles that make it easy to squirt the die exactly where you want it. When you use a couple of different colors, you should try to be remember to use colors that will look nice next to each other.

  6. Step 6

Put the twisted, died shirt in a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly, and let it sit overnight (or at least 5 hours).

  7. Step 7

Take the shirt out of the bag and take the rubber bands off the t-shirt while rinsing it under the faucet.

  8. Step 8

Put the shirt in your washing machine with a gentle detergent, and run it through a cycle with hot water. This should remove all of the excess dye from your shirt, and you will be left with a spectacular Grateful Dead shirt.
