Choose Leather Dog Leashes

Many dog trainers and owners swear by leather dog leashes. The energy and commands from the handler are transmitted along the leash without a word being spoken. Puppies also tend to learn much faster when they are trained on them as opposed to other types of leads. Unfortunately many on the market are of poor quality. Follow these directions to choose the best leather leash for your dog.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Go to a quality pet store or vendors at an AKC (American Kennel Club) event. You may be able to find leather leashes at discount or department stores, but they are less likely to be quality ones.

  2. Step 2

    Look at the underside of each leash. There should be no rough, pimple-like bumps. This is a sign that the leather was made from the underside of the cow and is of poorer quality.

  3. Step 3

    Fold the leash in half length wise and pull. There should be no give. If there is, this means that the leash will stretch over time… sometimes as quickly as 3-6 inches in only 6 months. This also makes it harder for the dog to understand nonverbal corrections and commands.

  4. Step 4

    After finding a quality leather dog leash, determine the length and width needed. It needs to be strong enough to withstand any pulling and wear and tear yet light enough to not hamper their movements or weigh them down.

    Good rule of thumb:

    Dog Size/Width of Leash
    -------------------------
    Small = 1/2”
    Medium = 3/4”
    Large = 1”

Tips & Warnings
  • Most dogs need 3 leashes. A 6’ for walks when not in heel. A 3-4’ for training, heel work, going in stores, etc. A 3-12” tab leash for very close work or training. If in doubt, a 4’ is the most versatile.
