Change Spark Plugs in a Vehicle

Changing the spark plugs in a vehicle is a fairly simple job that anyone can do. Not only is it simple, but it keeps the vehicle running smoother longer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Locating the spark plugs can be as simple as looking at the distributor cap and following the wires from it to the plugs. The distributor cap is round and usually black, it has wires plugged directly onto the top. These go from the cap to the spark plugs and is usually located near the front of the motor or side.

  2. Step 2

After locating the plugs, remember to only remove one wire at a time. Otherwise, you risk mixing the wires up and getting them out of order.

  3. Step 3

Once you remove one plug wire, you can see the top of the spark plug. Using the spark plug socket (used because it has a padding on the inside to not damage the new plug as it is replaced) and wrench, remove the spark plug.

  4. Step 4

Once you have it removed, replacing the old one with a new one is just as simple. Using the socket and wrench replace it. Do not tighten to tight, it must not be loose, but forcing it tight can cause damage.

  5. Step 5

Follow the above steps to replace the remaining spark plugs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the vehicle is cool when replacing the plugs
  • It is recommended to replace the wires when replacing the plugs
  • If the plug wires are old, they may break in the act of trying to get to the spark plugs, replacing these can fix your problem
