Recessed lighting can really update the look of a room. In order to maximize functionality the lighting must be spaced correctly. A light can also accent a particular feature of a room if placed properly. Here are a few tips on how to space recessed lighting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, figure out if there is anything in the room that you want to draw attention to. If so figure out where that object is going to be placed and center a light on it. This is commonly used where the lights are centered on cabinets or on fire place mantles. A set of lights can also be centered on the object. (Directional lights can also be a neat idea)

  2. Step 2

After all the objects of attention are covered, the rest of the room should be evenly spaced with lights. A thing to take into account when evenly spacing lights are the room size, the ceiling height, the room shape, and the cost. A larger room and a higher ceiling equals more lights. If the room is an odd shape a judgment call must be made on where the lights should be placed. And each light costs money so this must be considered as well.

  3. Step 3

Recessed lighting is commonly placed 3 to 10 feet apart. To judge this, find the center of the room. A light can be placed in the center of the room having other lights evenly spaced from there, or the lights can be evenly spaced around the center of the room.

  4. Step 4

This main thing is to walk around the room and visualize what you think will look best.

  5. Step 5

If the room isn’t finished check to make sure that the layout is satisfactory before the drywall is installed.
