Things You'll Need:
- Saw
-
Step 1
Start by picking out a site for your hillside camping shelter. You'll want a hillside that is relatively free and clear of large rocks, logs and other obstacles. Once you found a nice spot. Begin digging.
-
Step 2
Dig out an area that is enough for your to stand or crouch in, and has enough floor room for you to comfortable lay flat. Use the slope of the hill to help, as it will allow you to dig farther into the hill.
-
Step 3
Cut a series of logs for the roof. You will want strong logs, at least 4 inches in diameter. Lay them at an angle to create the roof/wall opposite the hillside of the hillside shelter. Consider digging out a small area for a fire pit. To do this, be sure the dirt is packed tightly above the area, and dig out a small area about 1 cubic foot in size. Dig a small vent hole out the other side of the hill for the smoke.
-
Step 4
Cover the logs from Step 3 in a layer of leaves to waterproof the hillside camping shelter. Try to use fresh green leaves, the bigger the better. Green leaves will be more waterproof than dead brown leaves.
-
Step 5
Finally, cover the leaves with a layer of earth to add insulation to your hillside camping shelter. Cut out a small entrance way into the side of the hill. You camping shelter is now complete.

on 8/23/2009 Good suggestion for a survival shelter. You just never know when you'll need something like this. It looks do-able and like it would work well.

on 8/21/2009 Interesting read. A mans job to do the digging since I could not build this hillside camping shelter myself. TX5*
