How to Level a Priest

The priest class in "World of Warcraft" is designed to be either a healer or a damage dealer, depending on how you spend your talent points. While you can play the game in whatever manner you desire and still eventually reach level 85, if you want to level as quickly as possible, you'll want to maximize your priest's damage capabilities and follow the shadow line of talents. Of course, choosing a talent tree is just one element of leveling your character, and there is much more to know in order to climb quickly through the game's ranks.

Instructions

Spend your first 10 levels in the starting area determined by your race and class. There are a number of quests and monsters in the area, which are designed to allow you to level up quickly. As a Priest, your main offensive spells will be "Smite," "Shadow Word: Pain" and "Mind Blast." Defensively, the monsters in these areas should not give you any problems, but you do have a few healing spells that you can use.

Choose the "Shadow" talent path once you reach level 10. This will greatly increase your offensive capabilities, and give you access to the "Mind Flay" spell, which you should use instead of "Smite" in your spell rotation. As you gain in levels, you will get a new talent point at every odd-numbered level until 79, after which point you will get one at every level. Your choice of shadow talents will be determined by your playing style, but "Shadowform," which will be available at level 21, is crucial to any shadow build.

Continue to complete quests, and kill monsters in the process, in your starting area. By level 10 you will have moved to the next zone, but there should still be enough quests in the area to allow you to level up to close to 20 before you run out. Once you are in the third zone from your starting area, you may run out of quests before you are a high enough level to move on to the fourth. If this happens, travel to the other continent to play in the same-level zone for one of the other races. For example, if you are a Night Elf in Ashenvale and run out of quests, you can head over to Duskwood on the other continent for quests around the same level. You may need to quest in multiple zones from this point on, as it takes longer and longer to level up.

Join the queues for either battlegrounds or dungeons. Battlegrounds will take you to a player-vs-player battlefield, while dungeons are linear instances with static bosses that you and a party can kill. Either of these activities will grant experience, and may make the leveling process a little less boring. Joining dungeon groups will also give you access to loot items that will make you character much more powerful. Be aware that when you are joining a dungeon group, even though you have healing spells you should queue as a damage dealer, as your healing spells are fairly weak.

Pay 10 gold to any trainer when you reach level 30 in order to gain access to an alternate talent tree. This will allow you to choose a secondary healing build, which you can use in place of your shadow build. This will allow you to queue for dungeons as a healer, which will result in considerably shorter wait times before you can enter the dungeons.

Advance to the expansion zones as soon as you are able to. Outland, Northrend and the Cataclysm zones all give significantly more experience than the previous zones. You can move to Outland from the Blasted Lands once you reach level 58. You can enter the Northrend areas from Stormwind or Durotar once you reach level 68. You can enter the Cataclysm zones, which are located on the two major continents, once you reach level 78.
