A tarp tent: Start by stringing a line between two trees. The line should be about 3 or 4 feet above ground. Drape the tarp over the line. Spread the tarp at the bottom and use a series of rocks or logs to secure it to the ground. Try to avoid using stakes, as you want to keep your tarp free of holes. Any holes in your tarp can continue to tear over time.

A tarp tent for windy environments: If there is a lot of wind, you can build your tarp tent accordingly. When you string the line for the top of the tent, tie one end to a tree, and the other to a large rock, short tree or a stake in the ground. That way, the lower end of the tent can face the wind, shielding you and the other tent inhabitants from the wind.

A tarp teepee: To make the tarp teepee, tie a line to the center of the tarp, avoiding punching a hole in the tarp. Tie the other end of the line to a high tree branch. Spread the tarp and use logs or rocks to secure the bottom of the teepee.
