How to Kill Poison Ivy Without Chemicals

An encounter with poison ivy can leave you miserable, with painful itching and blistering. You can identify poison ivy by its leaves, which are divided into three leaflets. If you have poison ivy growing in your yard, you should get rid of it. Although chemical treatments can be effective, you can take the natural approach -- ripping it out of the ground. Just be sure to protect yourself with long pants, long sleeves and gloves before venturing into the poison ivy patch. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for a day when the ground is moist. It will be much easier to pull or dig out the poison ivy.

    • 2

Grasp individual poison ivy plants with your gloved hands. Pull the plants out by their roots. Dig out larger plants with a shovel. Just be sure to dig well around and under the roots -- any piece of poison-ivy root left in the ground will sprout.

    • 3

Place the poison ivy plants in large plastic bags. Seal them and toss them in the garbage can.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your poison ivy is entwined with other plants, you may have to dig up some desirable plants along with the poison ivy. After digging, you can separate out the poison ivy, then replant your desirable plants -- just make sure there aren't any pieces of poison ivy roots left when you replant.

  • Launder your work clothes and gloves immediately after you're done pulling and digging out the poison ivy. Wash them separately from other clothes. After you remove the cleaned clothes from the machine, run another rinse cycle as a precaution against contaminating other clothing, recommends the Ohio State University Extension.
