What exactly do you do with an out of control patient in a medical office or facility? How and who will mitigate the disruption that the loud and irate patient is causing, causing other patients to become more and more anxious? These are questions that every medical office needs to already have answered due to the fact that this type of situation will occur more than just a couple of times a year.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing any medical professional could consider doing is to patiently listen to the patient. Far too often, anxiety mounts inside a patient that feels like they absolutely need to get something off of their chest. Simply guide the patient by stating that you will be glad to discuss the issue and ask them to follow you into a more private setting which is away from other patients.

  2. Step 2

The next step would be to identify with the patients issues and complaints. Prior to engaging in a one on one, if possible, have the patient's file there with you to scan for any diagnosis or problems in the past. All these things should be well documented. This will give you the ups on anything that may throw you. While talking, be certain to understand and identify with the patient as they may not be a knowledgeable of how things work.

  3. Step 3

Finally, be a problem solver. No matter what, there is always an answer and in many cases, it always works out positively. For just about any complaint, if you have the solution immediately, share it with the patient convincingly. If you don't have the answer right then, simply find it. Any answer is better than no answer, and this will more than likely mitigate the situation.
