Training a cat to perform a trick can be very rewarding. You will both get some mental and physical exercise. Your cat will also adore this structured time with you. It doesn't matter how young or old your cat is-training your cat to show off is easy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small bite sized treats
  • Some sort of sound command
  1. Step 1

It is very important to use Bite-sized treats. This way you can get the action practiced up to 30 times in a few minutes. Also-your cat will perform more in a session without becoming gorged.

  2. Step 2

Reward/lure an action that's close to what you want. It may not be the trick you're looking for but you should take this process in small steps.

  3. Step 3

Each time your cat does the action that is close to what you want then reward it. This way the cat is learning that, "If I do this I get a treat."

  4. Step 4

After your cat has mastered the semi-trick go for the full one.

  5. Step 5

Continue learning the trick. Once your cat has mastered the entire trick then you can move on to connecting it with a sound cue.

  6. Step 6

Avoid saying a cue word until the entire trick is mastered. Then you Say the word and get the cat to perform. Immediately after the trick then reward the kitty. After enough times the cat will immediately perform the trick once they hear the Marker Word.

Tips & Warnings
  • Suggestions for bite-sized treats=Bits of tuna, regular kibble, canned cat food on spoon, etc. I like using the cats regular food, this way I can train as much as I want and the cat won't get fat!
