House rabbits need space to run, dance and be merry. I have found that the best way to contain a house rabbit is by using an x-pen. This allows the rabbit space to run while you are gone and gives them the ability to move and rearrange the cage as needed. When you are home, allow the rabbit to run in a bunny safe area.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • x-pen
  • remnant of linoleum from hardware store
  • litter box and contents
  • water crock or bottle
  • food crock
  • rug
  • box, Dream cottage, cat tube or stool to sit on
  • sheepie or pad to sleep on
  1. Step 1

Cut and lay the linoleum square in the area where the pen will be.

  2. Step 2

Put the x-pen in a square or shape you have decided upon - that fits the room and allows the rabbit to be a part of the family. Rabbits typically do not jump over a cage, unless it is the short one. Get a taller cage (32" or so), to minimize the chance of escape.

  3. Step 3

Place the rabbit's litter box, carpet square or runner, water crock, food crock, hay box (next to litter box) and sleeping pad in the cage. Don't forget the toys and chew items! No worries, the rabbit will redecorate !

  4. Step 4

Place the rabbit in the x-pen and allow him or her to redecorate as needed.

  5. Step 5

Clip the cage shut, so the rabbit does not escape. Rabbits are smart and will move and escape if given the opportunity.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are other ways to pen your rabbit. Remember, the smaller the cage, the more free run time needed for the rabbit - outside of the cage.
  • Rabbits are NOT disposable pets. They are a lifetime commitment, so set up a cage with care.
  • You can always redo or change the cage, using the x-pen as a safe area to run.
  • Make sure that the cage or area is rabbit proofed and free of danger for your pet.
  • Your rabbit needs toys and stimulation. They are smart creatures and get bored.
