Make a Rubberband Shooter
Make a Rubberband Shooter

A rubberband shooter, also known as a rubberband gun, can shoot rubberbands across long distances. This simple device make a nice craft project for a rainy day afternoon, and also gives both you and your children a chance to improve your aim. Set up some cans or paper targets and see who can shoot the best. Experiment to see what variations you can come up with for your own rubberband shooter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2-inch-thick dowel rod, 12 inches long
  • Sandpaper
  • Knife
  • Rubberbands
  • Hot glue gun
  • Clothespin
  1. Step 1

Sand the ends of the dowel rod, and the entire rod if needed, until it's completely smooth.

  2. Step 2

Cut a notch horizontally across the center of one end of the dowel rod. The notch should be just deep enough to hook a rubberband into, and you should be able pull back on the rubberband without it sliding out. The end with the notch is now the front end of the rubberband shooter.

  3. Step 3
    Attach clothespin to dowel rod.
    Attach clothespin to dowel rod.

Lay down the dowel rod so that the notch is running horizontally (parallel with the floor). Use a hot glue gun to attach a clothespin to the body of the dowel rod at the opposite end from the cut. Glue the clothespin so the clamp part is pointed toward the front of the shooter, and the handle you push to open the clothespin is facing the back.

  4. Step 4

Wrap a rubberband around the clothespin and the dowel rod to help hold it in place if the glue isn't strong enough.

  5. Step 5

Hook a rubberband through the notch on the front of the dowel rod and open the clothespin. Place the other end of the rubberband in the clothespin and close the clothespin to hold the rubberband in place.

  6. Step 6

Aim the rubberband shooter and push the clothespin open. The rubberband will shoot out.

Tips & Warnings
  • For extra comfort, cut out a wooden handle and use wood glue or a hot glue gun to attach it to the bottom side of the dowel rod on the end with the clothespin. You can then hold the handle and push the clothespin with only one hand.
  • Never aim a rubberband shooter at a person or animal.
